Every household has massive operational needs. There's laundry to do, groceries to buy, birthdays to remember, bills to pay, appointments to schedule, etc.

Most of us manage all of this with a combination of calendar reminders, notes, and hoping we'll remember later. Whether you live alone or have a family,  this background operations typically takes up a big mental load.

This week, we're going to build a household AI manager that you can interact with using simple text messages.

Before we start: if you are getting this email forwarded to you and are not yet part of the lab - you can join the tiny AI lab here.

The Challenge:

Build a household manager that you can text with.

The experience should feel simple: send a message, let the AI understand what you mean, and have it take the appropriate action.

Depending on how ambitious you want to be, that action might be adding an item to a grocery list, creating a reminder, updating your calendar, organizing household tasks, planning meals, or answering questions about what's going on for you this week?

The prompt to get you started

For this week we have three different options based on your comfort level and how complex you want to make this.

Beginner

Build a household assistant using a ChatGPT or Claude Project.

Think of it as a shared brain for your household. Give it context about your routines, recurring tasks, important dates, anything else that's helpful. Over time, it can help you plan meals, organize weekends, create shopping lists, answer questions, and keep track of all the little things that make a household run.

Prompt:

❝

I want to build a household management system that I can chat with. The goal is to have one place where I can keep track of groceries, reminders, important dates, errands, recurring household tasks, meal planning, and anything else related to running my home. Help me design the best version using a project. Ask me questions to understand my household and then help me build the system step by step.

Intermediate

Build a system that allows you to quickly capture household information from your phone.

This could be a Google Form, Notion database, Airtable, a shared notes app, or another tool where anyone in your household can quickly add groceries, reminders, ideas, or tasks to a shared system. Then use AI to organize everything into weekly priorities, shopping lists, meal ideas, and upcoming reminders.

The prompt:

❝

I want to build a household management system that captures information from my phone and uses AI to organize it. Help me choose the right tools based on my technical experience, then walk me through building it step by step. My goal is to quickly capture household tasks, reminders, groceries, and events, then have AI organize everything into actionable plans and summaries.

Advanced

Build a system that allows you and ideally everyone in your household to send a text or WhatsApp message that AI can understand and process automatically + respond to questions based on your inputs.

There isn't one right way to build this. Experiment with the tools you're already using, or ask AI to recommend an architecture based on your experience. You might end up using a ChatGPT Project, Zapier, Make, n8n, Twilio, WhatsApp, Google Calendar, Notion, Airtable, or likely some combination of these tools

❝

I want to build a household management system that I can text with. When I send a message, I want AI to understand what I mean, determine whether it's a reminder, grocery item, calendar event, household task, meal planning request, or question, and then automatically take the appropriate action. Help me design the architecture, recommend the right tools for my experience level, and guide me through building it one step at a time.

Too easy?

Make your household AI proactive instead of reactive.

Connect it to your calendar, grocery list, task manager, or meal planning system. Instead of waiting for instructions, have it review your upcoming week, identify scheduling conflicts, remind you about important tasks before they become urgent, suggest errands based on where you'll already be, or automatically build shopping lists from your meal plan.

❝

Help me turn my household management system into a proactive AI assistant. Instead of waiting for me to ask for help, I want it to review my calendar, household tasks, shopping lists, routines, and upcoming events to identify potential problems, suggest priorities, remind me about important tasks, and recommend actions before I think to ask. Design the workflows, automations, and AI prompts needed to make this possible.

Why this matters?

One of the biggest opportunities with AI is helping us manage operational complexity and recurring tasks.

Our lives are full of tiny decisions. What needs to be picked up from the store? When should I schedule that appointment? Did I remember to respond to that invitation? What's for dinner? Individually, these decisions seem small. Collectively, they consume an enormous amount of mental energy.

Households are just one example. These invisible operational tasks exist everywhere in our homes, work, and relationships.

As AI becomes better at understanding context and taking action, we'll increasingly be able to build systems that handle more of this operational overhead for us. As you complete this challenge you will likely think of other areas in your life that carry a large and recurring mental load that you would be able to offload to AI.

That’s it for this week.
